Portland gets around 150 rainy days a year, and most of them land between October and April. All that standing water, slick pavement, and low visibility is brutal on your car — and on your safety. That’s why rainy season car prep isn’t optional here — it’s essential. A little prep now saves you from a breakdown (or worse) when the first big storm rolls through.

Here are the seven checks our ASE-certified technicians recommend as part of your rainy season car prep every fall.
1. Tires: Your Only Contact With Wet Pavement
Worn tires and standing water are a dangerous combination — that’s what causes hydroplaning. Check your tread depth with the penny test: stick a penny upside-down into the tread. If you can see all of Lincoln’s head, your tires are too worn for a Portland winter. (The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration offers more tire safety guidance worth a read.)
Also check tire pressure monthly. Pressure drops as temperatures fall, and underinflated tires grip worse and wear faster. The correct pressure is on the sticker inside your driver’s door jamb — not the number on the tire sidewall. Solid tires are the foundation of any good rainy season car prep plan.
2. Wiper Blades: The $30 Fix People Skip
If your wipers streak, chatter, or leave arcs of unwiped glass, replace them. In a city where it rains five months straight, good wipers aren’t optional — they’re survival equipment. Most blades last 6–12 months. If you can’t remember the last time you replaced yours, it’s time.
Top off your washer fluid too, and consider a rain-repellent treatment on the windshield for extra visibility. AAA recommends replacing wipers at least once a year — in Portland, we’d say don’t stretch it past that.
3. Brakes: Stopping Distance Doubles on Wet Roads
Wet pavement can double your stopping distance. If your brakes squeal, grind, pulse, or the pedal feels soft, don’t wait for the rainy season to find out the hard way. Have your pads, rotors, and brake fluid checked now — our Portland auto repair services include full brake inspections.
Portland’s stop-and-go traffic on I-5 and 205 is already hard on brakes — worn brakes plus a downpour is a combination you don’t want.
4. Lights: See and Be Seen
Shorter days plus heavy rain equals terrible visibility. Walk around your car and check every light: headlights (both low and high beam), taillights, brake lights, turn signals, and hazard lights. Replace any burned-out bulbs immediately.
If your headlight lenses are cloudy or yellowed, a restoration makes a shocking difference — it’s one of the cheapest visibility upgrades there is.
5. Battery: Cold + Wet Kills Weak Batteries
Batteries hate cold weather, and a battery that barely started your car in September may leave you stranded in November. If your battery is more than three years old, have it tested — it takes five minutes and we check it free as part of every rainy season car prep visit.
Corroded terminals are another common culprit. If you see white or greenish crust on the battery posts, get them cleaned before the rains set in.
6. Defroster and Heater: Don’t Discover Problems at 6 AM
Your defroster is a safety system, not a comfort feature — if it can’t clear your windshield, you can’t drive. Test it now: run the defroster on high and make sure it clears the glass quickly and evenly. Check that the heater blows hot, too. A weak heater can signal low coolant or a thermostat issue worth catching early.
7. Alignment and Suspension: Pothole Season Is Coming
Portland’s winter rains open up potholes fast, and one good hit can knock your alignment out or damage a strut. If your car pulls to one side, your steering wheel vibrates, or your tires are wearing unevenly, get it checked. Proper alignment also helps your tires grip wet roads evenly — the finishing touch on complete rainy season car prep.
Rainy Season Car Prep: Don’t Wait for the First Storm
Every October, we see the same thing: the first big rain hits, and our schedule fills up with cars that could have been fixed weeks earlier — dead batteries, bald tires, failed wipers. A pre-season inspection catches all of it in one visit.
Portland Best Auto Repair offers free estimates and honest, no-pressure inspections. Our ASE-certified technicians will run through this entire rainy season car prep checklist and tell you exactly what your car needs — and what it doesn’t.
